The Philippine Government passed the SIM Registration Act on December 27, 2022, and made it necessary for every SIM user to register their SIM cards. The Smart SIM Registration is straightforward. You just need to provide some important details and documents. Registration can be done online via the official Smart SIM portal, the GigaLife App, at Smart Stores, or by dialing *123# for step-by-step guidance.

Note: The Smart SIM registration deadline for old SIMs was July 25, 2023. However, you can now purchase and register a new SIM card anytime.  

Smart SIM Registration Methods

Smart Telecommunication officially introduced the following four methods of SIM registration:

  1. Registration Via Portal (Smart SIM Registration Link)
  2. Registration via the GigaLife app
  3. Register via Number 
  4. Register in Smart stores

Note: The process of SIM card registration is almost similar for Filipinos, Minors, corporations, and foreigners. However, the details and documents required vary in each case. 

Below is the complete tutorial with screenshots that I used to register my Smart SIM successfully. 

Register via the Portal (http://smart.com.ph/)

Below is the complete tutorial to register Smart SIM online via the official portal:

  1. First of all, visit the Smart SIM official portal by clicking on the registration link given below:

  1. You can also visit the smart SIM portal by scanning the QR code given below. Just open the camera of your mobile phone, scan the QR code, and you will be automatically redirected to the SIM registration page.

  1. On the Smart SIM portal’s Homepage, you will get an option to enter your phone number. Enter the phone number in the required field. 
  2. Please tick the box to agree to the terms and conditions and click the “send OTP” button.

  1. You will receive an OTP (One Time Password) on your Smart SIM number. Enter the OTP in the required field given below. If the OTP is not received, you can request a new OTP after two minutes. 
  2. Make sure that the OTP you entered is valid. Now, click on the verify OTP button. If you are using the wifi, then click on the “Click here” option to receive OTP and further instructions.
  3. Now, choose between old and new SIM registration types. 
  1. Now select the ID type and upload a clear photo of your ID. Make sure that all the details are visible on the ID.

  1. After it, scan your Face for face verification.  Make sure that you are in proper light and your face is visible while scanning.

  1.  Now you will get a SIM registration form. Fill the form with all the required details. The details include:
  • Full name 
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Adress
  • ZIP code

Always enter these details according to your official documents. 

  1. You will be asked to provide the alternative contact details. Enter your already registered number and an active Email address. Click next to continue.

  1. Click on the “Next” button to continue registration and proceed further. 
  2. Once done, click the submit button to submit the form. You will get a summary of the details you have entered. Check these details and make sure that all the deaths are valid.

  2. On the successful form submission, you will get a confirmation message: Congratulations! You have successfully registered your SIM card!

Tip: Always use a legit registration link and official portal for registration. Avoid third-party sources to register your SIM card. 

Follow the above guide step by step to register the SIM card successfully via the official portal. 

Register Smart SIM Via GigaLife App

The smart SIM can also be registered via the GigaLife app. Here is the step-by-step guide to register the smart SIM via the GigaLife app or Smart SIM app.

  1. First of all, download the Smart SIM app by download button given below.
  1. Once the app is downloaded successfully, open the app.
  2. You will get “Register your SIM” in the bottom right corner of the app. Click on that button.
  3. Now, enter your Smart SIM number in the required box. Make sure that you have entered an accurate number. 
  4. Tick the box to agree with the terms and conditions and click on the “Get OTP” button to receive OTP. 
  5. You will get an OTP on your Smart SIM number. Click on “Verify OTP” for OTP verification. If you are using the wifi, click on the “Click here” option to get OTP.
  6. Select your ID type and upload an image for ID verification
  7. Now, scan your face for the face verification.

  1. After that, you will get a SIM registration form. Fill in the form with all the required details. Always enter the details according to the official documents. 
  2. Provide the alternative contact so that Smart Telecommunication can contact you in case of any issue. 
  3. You will get a summary of all the information you have entered. Double-check all the details and make sure that everything is accurate. 
  4. Once done, submit the SIM registration form. You will get a confirmation message along with the control number. Save the control number for future verification of SIM registration.

Note: Always download the app from a trusted source. Avoid using any third-party app for the registration.

Smart SIM Registration Number

The postpaid Smart SIM user can replace their Smart SIM card via registration number. This method only works for the postpaid users. Here is how to do it:

  1. First of all, open your mobile and dial the SIM registration number (5858)
  2. You will get the instructions on the phone call. Follow the instructions given to you.
  3. Your SIM will be registered after a short verification process. 

Note: This method is only available for the postpaid smart users. The prepaid can not be used for registration. 

Register Smart SIM In Stores

If you are not compatible with online registration, Smart Telecommunications also provides face-to-face registration in stores. Here is how to do SIM registration in stores:

  1. Visit your nearest Smart SIM stores.
  2. Bring your important documents along with you.
  3. Ask the attendant available there for SIM registration.
  4. The attendant will ask you to provide some important details and documents.
  5. You will get a complete guide and help for registration.
  6. It will take a while, and your SIM card will be registered.

If you are facing any issues with online registration, in-store registration is the best option for you. You will get face-to-face guidance and help to register your SIM card.  Keep in mind that, SIM registration failure leads to Smart SIM deactivation.

Note: Repeat the process to register more than one SIM. However, each SIM will be registered separately under your name. Your SIM will be automatically available after four hours of registration.

All the above methods for SIM registration are 100% safe and secure. You can choose any of the methods according to your choice. 

However, as a regular Smart SIM user, I will always choose to register a SIM via the portal. It is because the SIM registration via the portal is simple and easy. Just open the portal and register your SIM card.

Smart SIM Activation

Once you submit your registration application, your Smart SIM card will be activated within 24 hours. You can check the status of your SIM to confirms whether your SIM is registered or not. 
In case your SIM is not registered after 24 hours, wait for a few more hours. If the SIM card is still not registered, contact the helpline and report your issue. You can also visit the Globe stores in case of this issue.
The helpline will take notice of your issue and solve it as soon as possible.

How To Check SIM Registration Status 

Once you have submitted the SIM registration, you can check your SIM registration status. Through registration status, you will check whether your SIM is activated or not. 

Here is how you can verify SIM registration with a few simple steps:

  1. First of all, go to the Smart SIM official Portal.
  2. Enter your smart SIM number to get OTP.
  3. Enter the OTP you received.
  4. You will get a reply on whether your SIM is registered or not.

Check Status Via GigaLife App

Registration status can be easily checked via the GigaLife app. Here is how you can check it:

  1. First of all, open the app and log in to your account.
  2. On the homescreen, you will see a “registered” symbol next to your mobile number.

In case you are facing any issue in checking your SIM registration status online, visit your nearest Smart store. Provide them with all the required details. You will get your status in a few minutes. 

Acceptable IDs for SIM Registration Smart

Here is the list of acceptable IDs that are necessary for SIM registration. 

  • SSS ID
  • PhilSys ID
  • GSIS e-Card
  • Driver’s License
  • NBI Clearance
  • Police Clearance
  • LTOPF ID
  • PRC ID
  • IBP ID
  • OWWA ID
  • BIR ID
  • Voter’s ID
  • Senior Citizen’s Card
  • UMID
  • PWD 
  • Passport
  • Any other valid government-issued ID with a photo

All these IDs must be official and updated. The unofficial and expired IDs are not allowed. Your application will be rejected in case of expired or unofficial IDs.

Requirements for Registration SIM smart

The smart SIM card registration online Requirements vary depending on the registration. The registration requirements are different for Filipinos, Minors, Companies, Tourists, and PWDS. 

Requirements for Filipino Citizens

The SIM Registration requirements for Filipinos are as follows:

  • Smart SIM 
  • Personal Information
  • Government-issued ID
  • Recent Selfie 

For Minors, the SIM will be registered in the details of the guardian. The guardian must provide a valid proof poof the relationship with the minor.

Requirements for Corporations and Organizations

The requirements to register Smart SIM of Companies are following:

  • Business Name
  • Business Address
  • Certificate of Registration from 
  • Certificate of Registration with BIR or BIR Form 2303
  • Valid ID of the Company’s Authorized Signatory
  • Secretary’s Certificate 
  • For government entities: Department or Office Order

Requirements for Foreign Nationals

The requirements for foreigners depend on the visa type. Here are the details:

  • Valid Passport (biographical page)
  • Proof of address in the Philippines (hotel booking or accommodation receipt)
  • Return ticket with date and time of departure
  • Personal Information
  • Valid Passport
  • Proof of local address in the Philippines

Requirements for Corporations and Organizations

  • Student ID with current school registration form
  • Alien Employment Permit from DOLE
  • ACR I-Card from the Bureau of Immigration

Note: The SIM registered for foreigners remains active only for 30 days. It would be automatically deactivated after 30 days. 

Tips For Successful Registration

I am an old Smart SIM user and have undergone the registration process several times. On the base on my experience, I am going to share valuable tips that would help you to register your SIM card without errors:

  • Always use the official portal, app, Link, number, and QR code for SIM registration. Never trust third-party sources and avoid them. 
  • Provide all the required details according to the official documents. Double-check the details and make sure that you have entered the valid information. Your application will be rejected in case of incorrect information. 
  • Upload a clear and up-to-date photo of your official ID.  Make sure that the holder’s signature and picture are clear.
  • Always upload a fresh selfie for face verification. You have a proper light source for clear certification. Additionally, avoid using any filters or effects on the selfie. 
  • Always enter the correct OTP for number verification. Your verification will not be completed in case of the wrong OTP. 
  • Make sure that you have a stable network connection while registering. The stable connection helps to receive OTP on time and prevents many other registration errors. 

Why Smart SIM Registration is Necessary

Due to the SIM Registration ACT, the SIM registration becomes necessary for every SIM user. It becomes necessary for everyone to obey the law and register a SIM card. Below are the importance of SIM registration. 

  • After the SIM Registration ACT, it became illegal to use unregistered SIM cards. For this reason, the unregistered SIM cards automatically get deactivated. Therdfre SIM registration is necessary to use the SIM card and prevent deactivation. 
  • SIM Registration links the SIM cards to verified identities. It ensures that the mobile number is traceable to real individuals.

Troubleshooting The Common Errors 

The SIM registration is straightforward and free from technicalities. But still, some users face several common issues while registering their SIM cards. But don’t worry, I have found a 100% working solution for these errors. 

Below is the complete guide to troubleshoot the common errors related to SIM registration.

OTP Not Received

Sometimes, the users fail to receive the OTP to verify their Smart SIM number. This issue occurs due to overtraffic or a slow internet connection. However, here is the step-by-step guide to overcome this issue:

Make sure that your device is connected to a stable network connection. If the network connection is slow, try moving to a good connection. Check out the Smart SIM APN settings for fast internet.

The OTP may be delayed due to over traffic. Therefore, wait for a while and try again. Check that your SIM card is properly placed and it’s working. 

Camera Not Working

Some users report that the camera does not work while registering. It becomes an issue for the face verification. But don’t worry, here is the quick solution to this issue:

  • Check that your device has enabled the camera permission. For this, go to the settings< smart app or your browser< app settings< allow camera.
  • Check that the camera on your device is working properly. Ensure that there is no issue with the device camera. 

ID Error 

The ID issue can be easily resolved by following the below-provided precautions:

  1. Check that you are uploading a valid and up-to-date ID.
  2. Make sure that your ID is clear. The holder’s signature and picture are visible. 
  3. Check that all the details on it are visible.
  4. The minimum recommended size for ID is 2 MB. Your ID must be smaller than the maximum size of 2 MB. 

Smart SIM Already Registered

This issue occurs when the SIM is still registered in the name of a previous user. Here is the only solution for this issue:

Contact the Smart SIM Support and report your issue. The helpline will review your report and fix your error as soon as possible.

App Crashes 

The app crashes during peak hours or due to high traffic. But it’s not a very big issue. Here is how to resolve this error:

Wait during the peak traffic hours. Try Gaian when there is low traffic. Make sure that you are using the latest version of the app. Update the app if the new version has arrived. Check that your device has a stable internet connection. 

If you have followed all the above precautions but the issue persists, contact the smart SIM card customer service. Report your issue to them. You will get a working solution as soon as possible.
